A1 Crash: Black Box Data Contradicts Driver’s Account

Data from the vehicles’ black boxes in a fatal A1 highway collision challenges the driver’s version of events, revealing a speed of 253 km/h.

BMW Speed Exceeded Claimed Limit

Sebastian M., the driver of the BMW, stated he was traveling at a maximum of 200 km/h at the time of the collision. However, the BMW’s black box recorded a speed of 253 km/h. The device’s maximum recording capacity suggests the actual speed may have been even higher.

Collision Details and Initial Testimony

A BMW driven by Sebastian M. collided with a Kia, resulting in the deaths of three occupants: a married couple and their five-year-old son. Sebastian M. has been charged with causing the fatal accident. He maintains the Kia unexpectedly veered into his lane, stating, “I just saw a car coming from the right lane to the left, straight at me. I couldn’t do anything.”

Kia’s Black Box Shows No Sudden Steering

Data from the Kia’s black box contradicts Sebastian M.’s account. A sudden lane change by the Kia would have registered as a significant steering wheel movement. However, the black box recorded no such movement.

Spare Tire Theory Disproven

A theory suggested the Kia may have been using a spare tire that could have failed, causing the vehicle to swerve. However, analysis of the Kia’s black box data, which independently recorded the rotational speed of each wheel, found no anomalies indicating a spare tire was in use.
