During a Friday hearing in Piotrków Trybunalski, suspect Sebastian M. accused prosecutors of failing to produce official extradition documents, while witnesses testified to his history of extreme high-speed driving.
Demands for Extradition Records
During a hearing at the District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski, Sebastian M. requested the prosecution provide documentation regarding his extradition proceedings. He claimed that despite his explanations provided in writing, the police issued a red notice, leading to his arrest in the United Arab Emirates in October 2023.
Sebastian M. argued that the prosecution’s failure to present these documents constitutes a significant dereliction of duty, asserting that such records must exist under international law. In response, Prosecutor Aleksander Duda stated that extradition activities are handled centrally by the ministry, not the local prosecutor’s office, and he cannot be compelled to provide documents he does not possess.
Ministry Clarification on Extradition
The Ministry of Justice stated that the Dubai Court of Appeal deemed the extradition legally permissible in early 2024. Following an appeal, the UAE Supreme Court upheld the ruling, and the final decision was authorized by the UAE Minister of Justice.
The ministry confirmed that the physical transfer of Sebastian M. to Poland was conducted in late May 2024 through cooperation between Polish and Emirati police units. He arrived in Poland on May 26 after being taken into custody three days earlier.
Witness Testimony on Speeding
A former employee of the defendant testified that Sebastian M. regularly drove at extreme speeds during business trips. The witness claimed they often traveled at approximately 200 km/h, and in one instance, he clocked the defendant driving a BMW at 304 km/h between Warsaw and Białystok.
Background of the A1 Tragedy
The fatal accident occurred on September 16, 2023, on the A1 motorway near Piotrków Trybunalski. A BMW driven by Sebastian M. collided with a Kia, which then struck a guardrail and caught fire, killing a family of three, including a five-year-old boy.
Sebastian M., aged 35, fled to the United Arab Emirates after the incident and was brought back to Poland in May 2024. He has remained in custody since his return and faces up to eight years in prison.
