During a court hearing in Piotrków Trybunalski, Sebastian M. accused prosecutors of failing to provide documentation regarding his extradition from the United Arab Emirates, alleging professional negligence in his case.
Dispute Over Extradition Records
Sebastian M. requested the prosecution disclose files concerning his extradition, claiming that despite his detention in the UAE and subsequent return to Poland, the relevant procedural documents have not been produced. He argued that international legal standards require such documentation to exist, citing the absence of these files as an “unheard-of failure of duty.”
Prosecutor Aleksander Duda responded by clarifying that extradition procedures are handled at a central ministerial level, not by the local prosecutor’s office. He stated he could not be compelled to produce documents for which he is not the authorized custodian.
Ministry Clarifies Legal Procedures
The Ministry of Justice explained that the Dubai Court of Appeal initially deemed the extradition admissible in early 2023. Following a series of appeals, the Supreme Court of the UAE upheld the ruling, and the UAE Minister of Justice signed the final extradition order.
The ministry further noted that Sebastian M.’s transfer involved cooperation between Polish and Emirati police forces. After being detained on May 23, 2024, he was flown to Poland on May 26.
Witness Testimony on Speeding
During the Friday session, a former employee of the defendant testified regarding his experience riding with Sebastian M. The witness stated that his employer frequently drove at speeds around 200 km/h on business trips.
The witness recounted an incident on the route between Warsaw and Białystok where he experienced his personal speed record of 304 km/h while riding in the defendant’s BMW. He noted that he had never experienced such high speeds before or since.
Details of the A1 Tragedy
The incident occurred on September 16, 2023, on the A1 highway near Piotrków Trybunalski. A BMW driven by the defendant collided with a Kia, which subsequently struck a barrier and caught fire, killing a family of three.
Sebastian M. fled to the UAE following the crash and was extradited to Poland in May 2024. The 35-year-old remains in custody, facing up to eight years in prison for causing the fatal accident.
