A wrong-way driver died early Sunday morning after colliding head-on with another vehicle on the A1 motorway in the Łódź region, resulting in a fire and multiple hospitalizations.
Fatal Wrong-Way Collision
The accident occurred around 2:25 a.m. on Sunday on the A1 motorway heading toward Gdańsk, between the Tuszyn and Łódź Południe junctions. Two passenger vehicles were involved in a head-on collision.
According to Asp. Aneta Kotynia of the Koluszki District Police, preliminary findings indicate that a driver entered the motorway against the flow of traffic. The driver died at the scene, while three individuals from the other vehicle, an Audi, were transported to a hospital.
Emergency Response and Fire Suppression
Following the impact, both vehicles caught fire. Witnesses evacuated the three injured victims before emergency responders arrived. Seven firefighting units, including four local volunteer fire brigades, extinguished the flames and illuminated the scene for police investigations, reported Jędrzej Pawlak, spokesperson for the Łódź Provincial State Fire Service.
Traffic Disruption and Recovery
The motorway was closed in the direction of Gdańsk for several hours, with police directing traffic to detours via the Tuszyn junction toward DK 12 and S8. Authorities urged caution as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and reopen lanes. The motorway was fully reopened to traffic between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
