A2 Motorway Expansion Continues Despite Winter Delays

Poland’s A2 motorway will exceed 620 km as new sections open, though winter has delayed completion of key routes.

Winter Construction Challenges

Although contractual terms typically allow contractors to suspend work from mid-December to mid-March, some continued despite harsh frosts. Preparations for drilling the next section of the S19 route tunnel south of Rzeszów and construction of Poland’s highest viaduct several kilometers away continued during winter.

Delayed Road Openings

Winter weather halted finishing works, significantly delaying the completion of certain road sections. The most affected are the A2 motorway from Siedlce to Biała Podlaska and a fragment of S1 in Silesia, from Bieruń to Oświęcim. Both were originally scheduled to open to drivers at the turn of 2025 and 2026.

Remaining Work

The roads lacked approximately ten days with positive temperatures and without heavy precipitation, which would have allowed for horizontal marking and completion of barrier and acoustic screen installations. Once the snowy and cold winter subsides, these finishing works can be finalized.
