Fatal Collision at Grochowska Intersection
A tragic accident occurred on January 19 at 3:00 PM at the intersection of Grochowska and Zamieniecka streets in Praga-Południe, resulting in the death of a six-year-old boy. The prosecutor’s office announced charges against both drivers – a 28-year-old woman driving a Ford and a 48-year-old man driving a Toyota – on suspicion of causing an accident with fatal consequences and injuries to others.
Circumstances of the Accident
The incident occurred near Szembek Square on Grochowska Street. According to preliminary police information, the Ford driver failed to yield while making a left turn, causing a collision with a Toyota. The Toyota was knocked off course and hit a group of people waiting at a pedestrian crossing. One of the vehicles rolled over onto the crossing as a result.
Emergency Response and Traffic Disruptions
Emergency services, including the fire department and medical rescue teams, worked at the scene, with an Air Ambulance helicopter also landing. Traffic disruptions occurred during the operation, with buses diverted to alternative routes. The road was later reopened.
Victims and Medical Response
The six-year-old boy was the most seriously injured. Despite efforts at the Children’s Hospital named after Prof. Dr. med. Jan Bogdanowicz, he died. A hospital spokesperson reported he was brought in in a state of “clinical death” with resuscitation lasting about 30 minutes. Three women aged 30, 34, and 45 were hospitalized, while two men were treated at the scene.
Legal Proceedings
Both drivers tested negative for alcohol. The scene was examined under prosecutor supervision. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office Warsaw-Praga Południe has charged both drivers under Article 177 of the Penal Code for causing a fatal traffic accident and injuries to three others, which carries a penalty of 6 months to 8 years imprisonment.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators reportedly have footage from city surveillance and municipal vehicle cameras. Interrogations of the detained drivers were conducted on Tuesday, with the Toyota driver questioned first. The prosecutor’s office plans to release more details after completing these procedures.
