Kraków police have arrested a suspect for the 2003 murder of a 23-year-old man stabbed in Nowa Huta after more than two decades.
Crime Details
The murder occurred on August 19, 2003, on the Strusia housing estate in Kraków’s Nowa Huta district. A 23-year-old victim was standing with two friends near a residential building when two young men approached and asked which football club they supported.
Despite not being associated with hooligan culture, the victim identified as a fan of Wisła Kraków, aware that the area was dominated by Wisła supporters. The attackers, believed to be associated with Cracovia’s hooligan group, had come to the neighborhood specifically to “hunt” Wisła fans.
After hearing the victim’s response, one attacker stabbed him directly in the heart. Despite resuscitation attempts, the young man died after being transported to the hospital.
Motive
Prosecutors emphasized that the victim was not a member of any hooligan “war.” As stated in the report: “The victim died solely because he lived in a neighborhood considered a bastion of supporters of one of rival clubs. He became an accidental victim of a war between pseudo-hooligan gangs.”
Previous Investigation
After the murder, dozens of police officers were involved in the case. A special hotline was established, and the case was widely publicized, including in the criminal magazine “997.” However, despite intensive efforts at the time, “it was not possible to gather evidence allowing charges to be brought against specific individuals.”
Recent Developments
After years, officers from the Kraków Division of the Central Bureau of Investigation, working under prosecutors from the Department for Undiscovered Homicides of the Małopolska District for Organized Crime Prosecution, returned to the unsolved case.
Following several months of operational and procedural activities, a man was arrested suspected of delivering the fatal stab wound. “The prosecutor presented Dominik B. with the charge of murder under Article 148 § 1 of the Penal Code.”
At the prosecutor’s request, the court decided to apply a preventive measure: “At the prosecutor’s request, the court applied temporary detention against the suspect for a period of three months.” The report also noted that “The suspect faces a life imprisonment sentence.”
