Director Agnieszka Holland compares current US media landscape to Nazi propaganda, warning that truth is being manipulated.
Propaganda Comparison
Director Agnieszka Holland has drawn parallels between current tensions in the United States and the propaganda era of Joseph Stalin and Joseph Goebbels. In an interview with “Variety,” Holland emphasized that while truth remains important in these times, it can be easily distorted. She expressed concern about how easily word meanings can be changed, noting fragility in language.
Film Connection
Holland referenced her film “Citizen Jones,” which tells the story of a journalist documenting the horrors of the Ukrainian famine. She explained that in the film, the protagonist tried to reveal the truth about what was happening, but nobody was interested. Holland warned that when media become corrupted and manipulate truth based on political and ideological agendas, democracy dies, stating “we are at this moment.”
ICE Agent Protests
Last week, thousands of people took to the streets of Minneapolis and other American cities to protest actions by federal immigration agents. According to organizers, demonstrations occurred in over 200 locations across 46 states, including New York, Washington, and Chicago. Friday was declared a national day of protest, with students nationwide skipping classes to participate.
Minneapolis Shootings
The protests were sparked by ICE agents shooting two residents in Minneapolis. Last week, 37-year-old Alex Prettie was killed by ICE officers. In early January, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was also fatally shot by an agent. After Prettie’s death, Minneapolis authorities again appealed to the Trump administration to withdraw immigration services. Crisis management director Rachel Sayre stated that federal agents are creating an atmosphere of terror and paralyzing normal community functions.
