Poland’s meteorological institute and government security center issued nationwide warnings against freezing rain and icy conditions, advising citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.
Nationwide Weather Warnings
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued first and second-degree alerts for the entire country, warning against freezing rain and freezing drizzle. Forecasters are particularly urging caution in northern and central Poland where there is an 80% probability of freezing precipitation. These warnings remain in effect until Thursday evening.
Risk of Slippery Surfaces
The primary hazard expected is slippery surfaces that have not been properly treated. IMGW emphasized that western voivodeships face increased risk of disruptions to trains and trams due to potentially more intense freezing drizzle. The agency recommended special caution in areas threatened by freezing precipitation and advised avoiding travel when such conditions occur.
Szczecin Takes Preventive Measures
In response to the warnings, authorities in Szczecin have announced deployment of plows and sanders to city streets. Additionally, 11 trams will clear the traction network during nighttime hours to prevent freezing. President Piotr Krzystek confirmed that authorities have learned from incidents that occurred at the end of January.
Government Security Center Alert
The Government Security Center (RCB) has also issued warnings against freezing rain and icy conditions. Their alert covers West Pomeranian, Pomeranian, Warmian-Masurian, Podlaskie, Lubusz, Greater Poland, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Masovian and Łódzki voivodeships, as well as parts of Świętokrzyskie, Lublin and Lower Silesian voivodeships. RCB is urging special caution on roads and sidewalks, with warnings valid until Thursday, February 5.
