A CNN poll reveals 58% of Americans view Trump’s first year in office as a failure, with economic approval at just 39%.
Declining Approval Ratings
In a survey conducted for CNN in the second week of January, 58% of Americans considered the billionaire’s first year in office a failure. The approval rating for the way Donald Trump is handling his job was 39%, down from 47% in January 2025 when he took office.
The declining approval is a problem for Republicans due to the November supplementary voting, during which a new composition of the House of Representatives and 35 out of 100 senators will be elected. Republicans risk losing their majority in both houses of parliament.
Economic Concerns Drive Dissatisfaction
Americans primarily rate Trump poorly due to his management of the economy. Most believe the country’s economic situation has worsened, and the president is doing too little to combat rising prices and prevent increasing living costs.
Approval ratings for Trump’s economic actions range from 30% to 44% in surveys.
