Andrzej Olechowski Dies at 77

Polish politician and diplomat Andrzej Olechowski, a key figure in Poland’s transformation, died overnight on April 25th at the age of 77.

Early Life and Political Career

Andrzej Olechowski was born in Kraków in 1947. He served as Minister of Finance in the government of Jan Olszewski and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Waldemar Pawlak.

Presidential Campaigns and Civic Platform Co-founder

Olechowski ran for president twice, in 2000 and 2010. In 2001, he co-founded the Civic Platform party alongside Donald Tusk and Maciej Płażyński.

Reactions to His Death

Prime Minister Donald Tusk described Olechowski as a politician and diplomat, one of the “three tenors” of Civic Platform, and expressed his condolences. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted Olechowski’s contribution to Poland’s transformation, emphasizing his commitment to responsibility, dialogue, and common sense.

Remembered for His Intellect and Wit

Marcin Bosacki, a deputy minister of foreign affairs, conveyed his sorrow at Olechowski’s passing. Former MP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dariusz Rosati recalled Olechowski as someone who could amuse even the most somber company, describing time spent with him as an intellectual and spiritual feast.

International Experience and Transformative Role

Rosati noted Olechowski’s extensive international experience, having worked at the UN in Geneva and Switzerland, as well as in New York for the World Bank in Washington D.C. This experience, Rosati stated, prepared him for the systemic changes in Poland in the early 1990s, and he was a significant participant in those changes.
