Anna Maria Żukowska Claims 33,000 Kilometers in Travel Expenses Despite Short Office Commute

Left-wing MP Anna Maria Żukowska has claimed 38,000 PLN in mileage reimbursements for 33,000 kilometers of travel, despite her parliamentary office being less than two kilometers from the Sejm.

The Discrepancy in Mileage

Reports indicate that the distance between the parliamentary office of Left-wing MP Anna Maria Żukowska and the Sejm on Wiejska Street is approximately 1.7 kilometers. The MP, who represents a Warsaw constituency, maintains her office in the city center.

Citing financial reports from jakglosuja.pl, the newspaper “Fakt” states that Żukowska claimed reimbursement for 33,000 kilometers of business travel in 2024, averaging 90 kilometers per day. This resulted in a total payout of over 38,000 PLN.

Parliamentary Expense Allowances

Each parliamentarian receives a monthly lump sum for office expenses, which amounted to 23,300 PLN last year. This budget is intended to cover rent, utilities, and staff salaries, though it also allows for the reimbursement of mileage and taxi travel.

Żukowska ranks among the top three Warsaw MPs for mileage claims. Piotr Kandyba (KO) leads with 42,000 kilometers and 48,000 PLN in reimbursements, followed by Piotr Uściński (PiS) with 33,500 kilometers and 33,000 PLN. “Fakt” notes that MPs are eligible for free public transportation in Warsaw.

Status of Personal Assets and Commentary

According to her asset declaration, Żukowska does not own a car. Current regulations, however, permit MPs to claim travel expenses regardless of vehicle ownership. The MP has declined to comment on these reports.

New Regulatory Framework

Beginning this year, MPs using private vehicles within their constituency may claim reimbursement for up to 1,500 kilometers per month at rates of 1.15 PLN or 0.89 PLN per kilometer, depending on engine capacity, with a monthly cap of 1,725 PLN.

Travel conducted outside of an MP’s constituency must now be recorded in a specific register, including precise dates and routes. This data will be subject to oversight by officials from the Chancellery of the Sejm.
