Another Wave of Winter Approaching Poland. Temperatures Could Dramatically Drop

Arctic air mass set to bring significant drop in temperatures across Poland, with lows potentially reaching -22°C by late January.

Another Wave of Frost Approaching

A spokesperson and meteorologist from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management provided the latest weather information valid until January 18. In the coming days, an arctic air mass will begin flowing over Poland. Nighttime temperatures will systematically decrease, with local lows potentially dropping below -20°C, especially under clear skies and with weak winds.

Initially, the strongest frost will occur in the east and central parts of the country. However, with each passing day, the lower temperature will also cover the western part of Poland. During the day, temperatures will range from -7°C in the center and east to 4-6°C in the west. With each subsequent day, it will get significantly colder in the west, with dry, cold, and high-pressure conditions dominating.

The meteorologist also added that at the end of next week, there will be a “reconstruction of the baric field,” which may result in an increase in cloud cover and snowfall.

What Will the Coming Days Be Like?

According to the ECMWF weather model, significant cooling is expected to return to Poland within the next 10 days. From Saturday, January 17, the minimum temperature will drop dramatically in many places. It will be coldest in the Podlaskie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Lubelskie, and Podkarpackie voivodeships, where the minimum temperature is expected to drop to -16°C.

In the following days, it will get even colder. On January 24, the minimum value in the Podlaskie Voivodeship could even reach -22°C. From January 20, similar values may also appear in the Mazowieckie and Świętokrzyskie Voivodeships, with the minimum temperature potentially dropping to -17°C.

In the following days, it will be equally cold in central, southern, and eastern Poland. On January 24, the temperature will drop below -11°C in most of the country. Meanwhile, the lowest maximum temperature will be on January 23, when it will be -12°C in southern Poland.

When Will Warming Arrive?

The long-term ECMWF EPS model showed that significant warming should only arrive at the beginning of February. Then the forecasted maximum temperature may rise to 2°C on the majority of Poland’s area. The minimum temperature should also increase, with only the southern edges expected to exceed -5°C.
