The head of the National Counterterrorism Center resigned, citing opposition to the ongoing war in Iran and alleging it was initiated under Israeli and American lobbying pressure.
Resignation Statement and Allegations
Kent stated he could not conscientiously support the war in Iran, asserting that Iran did not pose a direct threat to the country. He alleges the war began due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.
In a letter to President Donald Trump, Kent accused high-ranking Israeli officials and influential American media figures of launching a disinformation campaign that undermined the “America First” agenda and fueled pro-war sentiment, drawing parallels to the 2003 Iraq War.
Kent’s Background and Views
Kent is a veteran of U.S. special forces, having served in Iraq and Yemen. His wife, Shannon Smith, a Navy cryptologist, was killed in a 2019 ISIS attack in Manbij, Syria.
Following his wife’s death, Kent became a vocal critic of U.S. military interventions and the establishment, also criticizing U.S. aid to Ukraine. He unsuccessfully ran for Congress as a Republican.
His supervisor was Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who shares many of Kent’s views.
Internal Dissent Within Trump Administration
Some within Trump’s circle are reportedly discussing withdrawal from Iran. The resignation is the first public protest from a member of the Trump administration against the war in Iran.
David Sacks, a presidential advisor, previously advocated for a swift end to the war, warning that Israel might use nuclear weapons and suggesting a declaration of victory to appease markets.
MAGA Movement Divisions and Public Opinion
The attack on Iran is criticized by the anti-interventionist wing of the MAGA movement, including Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor Greene, but polls indicate they represent a small portion of Trump’s base.
A Quinnipiac University poll showed 85% of Republican voters support the war, while 53% of all voters oppose it.
European Opposition and Trump’s Disappointment
Europe has rejected Trump’s proposals regarding operations in the Strait of Hormuz, and he has expressed his disappointment.
