The appellate court rejected an appeal in the case of Stefan Wilmont, the killer of former Gdańsk mayor Pawel Adamowicz, after the deadline passed on January 23, 2024.
Appeal Denied After Deadline Exceeded
Gdańsk radio station Radio Gdańsk reported that the defense attorney filed an appeal after the statutory deadline had expired. The chairman of the II Criminal Appellate Court in Gdańsk refused to accept the petition, stating that the request was submitted too late.
Stefan Wilmont had originally engaged an official guardian, who then switched to a chosen lawyer. The new counsel did not request a written explanation of the judgment, and the court was not obliged to provide an answer.
Pawel Adamowicz Dies After Wośp Attack
The former president of Gdańsk, Pawel Adamowicz, died on 14 January 2019, a day after being attacked on the stage during the final of the Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy (WOŚP).
He had thanked volunteers for their support before beginning a countdown to the “Światełko do nieba”, after which a perpetrator ran up and stabbed him with a knife; the assailant was immediately rendered unconscious.
Stefan Wilmont Sentenced to Life
On 16 March 2023 the Gdańsk District Court convicted Wilmont of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment, citing a “motivation worthy of special condemnation” and a severely limited capacity to recognize the act.
On 23 January 2024 the Gdańsk Appellate Court upheld the lower court’s decision, maintaining the life sentence.
