Poland is experiencing severe winter conditions with temperatures dropping to nearly -30°C as an arctic air mass sweeps across the country.
Record Cold Temperatures
This winter has been particularly harsh, with snow cover of up to 30 cm mainly in eastern and northeastern regions. Eastern provinces (especially Podlasie and Lubelszczyzna) have seen temperatures below -10°C for several days.
In Suwałki, temperatures dropped to nearly -28°C on Monday morning, with surrounding areas reaching nearly -30°C. This extreme cold is attributed to an influx of continental arctic air mass from far north and a high-pressure system over Poland.
Further Temperature Drops Expected
The night from Monday to Tuesday will bring significant temperature drops in the east, center, and northeastern parts of Poland. Many areas could see thermometers drop to -20°C, primarily affecting Podlasie, Lubelszczyzna, Mazowsze, Warmia, Mazury, and locally Kujawy and the eastern part of the Łódzkie region.
There is a possibility that temperatures could drop to -25/-30°C, especially with weak winds and clear skies. According to the ECMWF model, temperatures in the eastern extremes could approach -30°C, though -25/-27°C should be expected.
Regional Temperature Variations
On the south and southwest, a slight warming will follow the frost period. By Wednesday afternoon, temperatures in this region could reach as high as 5°C.
In the northern and eastern parts of the country, frost will persist around -5/-10°C. On Thursday, frost will retreat further to the northeast, with temperatures below -10°C expected only in the northeastern extremes (Suwałsczyzna) and locally in the north. In contrast, temperatures in the south could rise to 6-8°C.
