Persistent severe frost in Warsaw has caused 8 emergency water outages across 7 districts, leaving a total of 83 addresses without water, according to MPWiK reports on Sunday, January 18.
The capital’s temperature dropped to approximately -13°C on Sunday morning. Such extreme conditions are known to damage underground infrastructure, causing pipe leaks and cracks that necessitate emergency water shutoffs for repairs.
Affected Areas and Repair Schedules
According to MPWiK, affected locations include Mokotow (ul. Postępu), Ochota (ul. Żwirki i Wigury), Targowek (ul. Mrozowska), Ursus (ul. Mariana Keniga and ul. Andrzeja Szomańskiego), Ursynow (ul. Ludwinowska, ul. Muzyczna, ul. Poleczki, ul. Wyczółki), Wilanow (ul. Biedronki), and Zoliborz (ul. ks. Jerzego Popiełuszki, ul. Zygmunta Krasińskiego). Repairs are ongoing, with most expected to be completed by 15:00 or 20:00 on January 18.
Extended Cold Warning
The severe cold is expected to persist in the coming days. The IMGW-PIB has issued a first-degree warning for ‘severe frost,’ effective until 10:00 on January 20, covering the Capital City of Warsaw. Long-term forecasts indicate temperatures will remain below freezing, increasing the risk of further water main failures due to prolonged ground freezing.
