Asset Disclosures Reveal Seized Funds and Overseas Stays of Ziobro and Romanowski

Newly published 2025 financial disclosures from the Chancellery of the Sejm detail the assets of PiS politicians Zbigniew Ziobro and Marcin Romanowski, both of whom currently remain abroad amid pending legal proceedings.

Financial Disclosures and Romanowski’s Assets

The 2025 asset declarations confirm that Marcin Romanowski has spent the last year in Hungary, where he was granted political asylum. Media reports now suggest he may be in Turkey, where entry is permitted using a national ID card following the invalidation of his passport.

Romanowski’s filing shows he accumulated 8.7 million Hungarian forints over the past year. His income included 16,092.37 PLN from parliamentary activities and 17.5 million forints from the Hungarian-Polish Institute of Freedom, alongside 13,600 PLN in personal savings.

Seized Funds and Legal Defense

Romanowski disclosed that over 114 million PLN has been seized from his bank account, a figure he attributes to the value of projects funded by the Justice Fund that are currently being challenged by prosecutors.

In his statement, Romanowski described his departure as a response to the repressive nature of current government actions, claiming that combatting these activities from abroad is more effective.

Zbigniew Ziobro’s Asset Portfolio

Zbigniew Ziobro reported savings of approximately 260,000 PLN and 800 EUR. His declared real estate includes a 133-square-meter house with a utility building and summer cottage, valued at 950,000 PLN, plus three agricultural plots worth about 485,000 PLN.

Ziobro’s 2024 income included nearly 142,000 PLN from his parliamentary salary and over 44,000 PLN in parliamentary per diems.

Funding of Legal Defense and Asset Seizures

Ziobro stated that he requested financial assistance for his legal defense from the Institute of Polish Sovereignty Foundation after being surprised by arrest warrants while in Budapest. He committed to repaying the Foundation the 57,000 PLN in net costs incurred in 2025, plus a 50 percent surcharge, totaling 85,500 PLN.

The former Justice Minister confirmed that his bank accounts and real estate holdings were seized on November 12, 2025.

Legal Status and Ongoing Investigations

Following the election victory of TISZA in Hungary, leader Péter Magyar suggested that the Polish politicians would not remain in the country long. Ziobro has since confirmed his relocation to the United States.

Both men face charges related to irregularities within the Justice Fund. A European Arrest Warrant (EAW) was reissued for Romanowski in mid-February, while a similar motion regarding Ziobro is currently pending before the court.
