At least 20 Mathematics Matura Exams Invalidated Amid Cheating Scandal

At least 20 mathematics matura exams have been invalidated after students used internet-connected devices to share exam papers on social media during the 2026 Polish graduation exams.

Exam Dishonesty and Social Media Leaks

During the 2026 Polish graduation exams, over 340,000 students participated in sessions marred by academic dishonesty. During the first two days, numerous exams were invalidated due to the copying of exam sheets, including a dozen for the Polish language exam and at least 20 for mathematics. Based on over 90 percent of processed protocols, several students were invalidated for bringing mobile phones into the room, while others were penalized for not completing tasks independently.

The basic-level Polish exam on May 4, 2026, saw images of the exam paper appear on X (formerly Twitter) as early as 9:18 AM. CKE Director Robert Zakrzewski clarified that this was not a pre-exam leak, but rather students using internet-enabled devices inside the examination halls.

Mathematics Exams Also Invalidated

The second day of the session on May 5, 2026, saw a repeat of the previous day’s scenario. During the basic-level mathematics exam, images of the sheets surfaced on X just minutes after the 9:00 AM start. While the CKE confirmed that several mathematics papers were invalidated, Vice-Minister of Education Katarzyna Lubnauer stated that at least 20 students had their mathematics exams invalidated.

Lubnauer defended the existing security systems, stating that while they prevent pre-exam leaks, the current issue stems from students violating regulations during the testing process.

A Year of Waiting and the Threat of Criminal Liability

The consequences are severe. CKE Director Zakrzewski explained that students whose exams are invalidated will not receive their diplomas this year. While they may proceed with other scheduled exams, they can only retake the invalidated subject the following year. Vice-Minister Lubnauer emphasized that those with invalidated mathematics exams are barred from participating in the August retakes.

Zakrzewski also announced that the CKE will notify the prosecutor if there are justified suspicions of lawbreaking, and he urged students to leave all electronic devices, including smartwatches, at home. Since 2025, all telecommunication devices are prohibited, with the sole exception of medical devices used for monitoring health, such as glucose monitors.

Matura 2026 Under Strict Supervision

The Ministry of Education and the CKE maintain that security remains effective through rigorous printing and transport protocols. Despite increased training for exam supervisors and stricter control of electronic devices, officials noted that the prevalence of smartphones and social media continues to pose a challenge to maintaining exam integrity.
