Australia Ends Seven-Month Manhunt; Suspect in Police Killings Shot Dead

After a seven-month search, Australian police fatally shot Dezi Freeman, suspected of murdering two officers in Victoria state last August.

Suspect’s Death Confirmed

Police in Victoria state confirmed the death of the suspect, identified as Dezi Freeman, following a lengthy siege at his rural property. The shooting occurred around 5:30 AM local time after a three-hour standoff. Authorities stated Freeman was armed at the time of the shooting.

Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed the identity of the deceased as Freeman, pending formal identification. He emphasized that Freeman had the opportunity to surrender peacefully but did not. No officers were injured during the operation.

Investigation into Possible Accomplices

Investigators believe Freeman may have received assistance in evading police for seven months. Authorities will focus on identifying and holding accountable anyone who aided him.

Premier’s Statement

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan stated, “Today, a bad man is dead. It’s over.”

Background: The Double Murder

The case centers around the deaths of two police officers – Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart – who were shot by Freeman during a search warrant execution on August 26th related to a sexual offenses investigation.

Freeman’s Ideology and Past Actions

Desmond Filby, known as Dezi Freeman, identified as a “sovereign citizen,” adhering to an anti-government movement that rejects state authority and law. He lived in Porepunkah with his wife and two children.

Locals reported Freeman’s radical views intensified during the restrictive COVID-19 lockdowns in Victoria. He repeatedly expressed hostility towards state institutions, attempting to obstruct a judge during a hearing and attempting to prosecute the state premier, Daniel Andrews, for treason in 2021 – a case that was quickly dismissed.

Prior to the shooting, Freeman had a history of antagonism towards authorities.
