On Friday morning, Ukrainian police and prosecutors searched the office of Andriy Jermak, the president’s chief aide, in Kyiv while an ongoing investigation was underway.
Ukraine. Search in Jermak’s Office
On Friday morning, Ukrainian authorities entered the office of Andriy Jermak, the president’s chief aide, pursuant to a raid carried out by officers from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Special Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutors stated that the investigation is legal and ongoing, adding that details will be released later. At present, the nature of the case being investigated remains unknown. Jermak has held the position of Head of the President’s Cabinet since February 11, 2020.
Questions Raised About Jermak
Ukrainian media recalled that in a meeting with President Zelensky last week, members of his Servant of the People party asked about Jermak’s future, suggesting a potential resignation. Ukraine’s official sources do not rule out that he may be linked to a corruption scheme under investigation by Ukrainian security services. Zelensky answered that he is considering the matter and is thinking about it. Jermak was also present at the meeting.
Widespread Corruption Scandal in Ukraine
In early November, seven individuals were charged with participating in a $100 million corruption riel within the Ukrainian energy sector, involving public procurement in state companies, including Energoatom. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine announced that among those investigated are a former adviser to the Minister of Energy and the former head of Energoatom. The investigation identifies Timur Mindycze, a business partner of President Zelensky from his time in the “Quarter 95” studio, as the orchestrator. The inquiry also involves the Justice Minister Herman Halushchenco and the former head of the Energy Ministry, who are slated to appear in a recorded interview with suspects.
