Slovakian police reported about an avalanche that descended on Friday, February 6th at 11:00 in the area of Złomiska Valley in the High Tatras. The avalanche swept away two men, Hungarian citizens aged 37 and 30. Rescue workers were immediately sent to the scene.
Rescue Attempt Hindered by Weather
According to reports from Radio Kraków, Slovakian rescuers asked TOPR for assistance with a helicopter. However, this was not possible due to unfavorable weather conditions. – There are two people under the snow in the Tępy region, near Popradzki Staw – TOPR rescuer Grzegorz Kubicki informed Radio Kraków. Despite attempts, rescuers were unable to save the men’s lives. “The police are intensively dealing with this matter. Due to the situation, it is not possible to provide more detailed information” – the Slovak officers wrote.
Avalanche Warning in Effect for Tatras
Currently, there is a second level of avalanche danger in the Tatras. “The snow cover is generally well-bound, but on some steep slopes it is moderately bound. Avalanche release is possible mainly with additional load, especially on steep slopes (…). Spontaneous descent of very large avalanches is unlikely” – TOPR wrote.
