The United States and Iran are reportedly approaching a breakthrough via a 14-point memorandum to end the war, with a decisive response expected within 48 hours.
Negotiation Progress and Uncertainty
Axios reports that the White House is convinced a consensus on a one-page memorandum is near, citing two American officials and two other informed sources. Reuters reached similar conclusions after speaking with a Pakistani mediator and another source informed of the negotiations.
A Pakistani informant told Reuters, “We will close it soon. We are close.” While the U.S. expects an Iranian response on several key issues within the next 48 hours, some American officials remain skeptical due to divisions within the Iranian authorities.
Details of the Memorandum
The 14-point memorandum aims to end the war and initiate a 30-day negotiation period in Islamabad or Geneva to establish a detailed agreement. The document includes an Iranian moratorium on uranium enrichment, a pledge to never pursue nuclear weapons, and agreement to unannounced UN inspections.
The proposal also suggests lifting American sanctions and restrictions on transit through the Strait of Hormuz. A U.S. informant told Axios that if negotiations fail, the United States maintains the option to restore the blockade or resume military actions.
Trump Warns Iran: Bombing Will Begin if Terms Are Rejected
Donald Trump stated on Truth Social that if Iran agrees to the terms, the “legendary Operation Epic Fury” will end and the Strait of Hormuz will be open to all, including Iran. He cautioned that if they refuse, “bombing will begin and it will be, unfortunately, at a much higher level and with greater intensity than before.”
Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that while the document does not need to be signed in a single day, the U.S. requires a “diplomatic solution that clearly defines the topics Iran is ready to negotiate” and its “range of concessions.”
