Supporters of Górnik Wałbrzych basketball team were denied entry to a match in Wrocław, prompting an investigation by Poland’s Ombudsman for Citizens’ Rights.
Ticket Sales and Fan Declarations
The controversy stemmed from the method of ticket distribution, which required purchasers to declare their club allegiance. This allowed organizers to deny entry to Górnik Wałbrzych fans, even those without prior sanctions, and refused refunds.
The system also blocked ticket purchases from certain regions, further restricting access for Górnik supporters.
Disciplinary Decisions and Police Concerns
The match organizer, WKS Śląsk Wrocław, cited a Polish Basketball League disciplinary ruling from April 13, 2025, banning a recommended group of Górnik fans from attending. This followed incidents at a previous away game.
Police expressed concerns that the presence of Górnik fans could escalate aggression, citing a “reasonable suspicion” of potential violence.
Ombudsman’s Intervention and Fan Rights
The Deputy Ombudsman for Citizens’ Rights, Stanisław Trociuk, has requested the Polish Basketball Association (PZKosz) to analyze the situation and provide a statement.
The Ombudsman argues there is no legal basis to ban all Górnik fans, as restrictions should apply only to individuals with court or administrative decisions against them. Such actions could infringe on the right to participate in cultural events, including sports.
Potential Consequences for PZKosz and Organizers
The Ombudsman’s intervention may lead to revisions in the organization of basketball matches in Poland. PZKosz’s response will set standards for future events.
Changes to ticket sales regulations and entry procedures are possible, potentially prohibiting fan declarations and club-based access restrictions.
