Poland braces for extreme cold as meteorological models predict temperatures may plummet below -20°C in late January.
Current Weather Forecast
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has published a forecast indicating that the coming days will bring slight warming to western Poland. Temperatures there will range from 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. The warmest temperatures (5°C) are expected on Saturday, January 17, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
Meanwhile, it will be colder in central and eastern parts of the country, where frosts are expected. In the northeast, temperatures will reach -7°C, and in subsequent days, -10 to -12°C.
Cooling Trend Expected
Meteorologists predict cooling as a cold front begins moving westward on Wednesday, causing Thursday in central Poland to see temperatures from -10 to -13°C. The following days will bring frost across the entire country, ranging from -5 to -9°C.
Temperatures will gradually become colder each day, until on Sunday, January 25, most of Poland will experience -9°C in the west and -10 to -14°C in the central regions. It will be coldest in the Lublin and Pomeranian voivodeships, where thermometers may show -14°C during the day.
“Beast from the East” Phenomenon
Both the ECMWF and GFS models indicate that additional cooling will flow in from the east in the coming days. This will cause temperatures to drop even to -20°C.
Initially, residents of border regions will feel the effects, but on January 30 and 31, it will reach central Poland, causing significant frost.
