The Czech intelligence service BIS announced the breakup of a Belarusian spy network active in European countries, with support from Romanian and Hungarian services.
Operation Details
The BIS dismantled the network on September 8, revealing that the KGB had orchestrated the operations against European nations. Among those implicated were a deputy chief of Moldova’s SIS.
Diplomat Involvement
A Belarusian diplomat is believed to have been part of the network, prompting the Czech Foreign Ministry to issue a statement: “We will not tolerate the abuse of diplomatic protection for intelligence activities.”
Prevention Measures
Czech Intelligence Chief Michal Koudelka emphasized that the network’s success was possible because Belarusian diplomats could freely move between European countries: “To effectively counter these hostile actions in Europe, we must limit the movement of accredited diplomats from Russia and Belarus within the Schengen area.”
