Boat Accident on Salińskie Lake Claims Two Lives; Helmsman Intoxicated

A boating accident on Salińskie Lake near Gniewino, Poland, on Saturday night resulted in two fatalities and the arrest of a drunk boat operator.

Lake Salińskie Boat Capsizes

Emergency services received a report of a capsized boat on Salińskie Lake in the municipality of Gniewino (approximately 25 km from Wejherowo) shortly after 11 PM on Saturday. The boat had five people on board.

One person managed to swim to shore independently, while two others were rescued from the water by emergency services and transported to a hospital, their lives not in danger.

Two Confirmed Dead

Divers from the State Fire Service recovered the bodies of a woman and a man from the lake during the night. A doctor confirmed their deaths, according to Police Sergeant Karolina Pruchniak of the Wejherowo County Police Headquarters.

Victims Identified

Radio Gdańsk reports the deceased woman was 28 years old, and the man was 27. The rescue operation concluded before 6 AM on Sunday.

Drunk Helmsman Detained

Police detained the 33-year-old man who was operating the boat at the time of the accident. A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol content exceeding 1.5 per mille. Police, under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office, are investigating the detailed circumstances and causes of the tragedy.
