Supreme Court dismisses appeal, confirming 25-year sentence for Czesław K. who murdered wife Grażyna K.
Murder of Grażyna K.
The body of Grażyna K. was found at the end of February 2019 in the Uszwica river in the village of Bielcza in Brzeski county. The woman’s disappearance was previously reported by her family. It was established that Grażyna K. had flown to Poland from England a month earlier, on January 3, 2019. The last person said to have seen her that day was her husband – 37-year-old Czesław K.
The man explained that he did not report the disappearance because he was sure that Grażyna K. had returned to England. However, the woman’s relatives were concerned about her sudden disappearance.
Charges against Czesław K.
After several months, on July 2, 2019, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Tarnów issued a decision to charge Czesław K. with the murder of his wife. However, the man managed to escape abroad, to Great Britain. A wanted list and a European Arrest Warrant were issued for Czesław K.
The man was arrested in the same month by British police in London. Because the extradition procedure was prolonged, he was transported to Poland only after more than three years – in May 2022. “The suspect did not admit to this act and refused to provide explanations. He submitted only a short statement in which he denied that he committed this crime. The alleged motive for the murder could be jealousy and financial settlements between the spouses,” the prosecutor’s office informed.
Supreme Court dismisses appeal
In September 2024, the District Court in Tarnów sentenced the man to 25 years in prison. In May of last year, the verdict was upheld by the Regional Court in Kraków. The proceedings took place behind closed doors due to the welfare of the child of Grażyna and Czesław K.
As determined by Gazeta.pl portal, in November, an appeal was filed with the Supreme Court by Czesław K.’s defense. At the hearing held on December 17, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal as “manifestly unfounded.”
