Bogucki Backs Sikorski’s Response to Israeli Minister’s Conduct

Zbigniew Bogucki, chief of the presidential cabinet, praised Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Thursday for his measured reaction to the controversial behavior of an Israeli government official toward detained activists.

Governmental support for the Foreign Minister

Speaking on Polsat News on Thursday, May 21, Zbigniew Bogucki affirmed that Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski fulfilled his role by responding to the situation. Bogucki described the reaction as “sufficient,” emphasizing the need for a cool-headed approach rather than overreacting to every minor incident.

Bogucki defended the decision of President Karol Nawrocki not to personally address every development, noting that responding to specific videos or images is the responsibility of ministers rather than the head of state.

Controversy over Ben-Gvir’s actions

The diplomatic friction stems from a video posted by Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, showing him mocking detained activists from a flotilla. In the footage, the activists are seen kneeling with their hands bound, while the minister waves an Israeli flag and claims authority over the territory.

The minister’s behavior has faced condemnation from several figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Ambassador Mike Huckabee, who accused Ben-Gvir of betraying the dignity of his nation.

Poland demands accountability

Foreign Minister Sikorski summoned the Israeli charge d’affaires to the ministry on Thursday, demanding a formal apology and the immediate release of Polish citizens held in detention.

Sikorski stated on social media that while the ministry previously advised against travel to the region, Poland does not accept the violation of its citizens’ rights or dignity, insisting on treatment consistent with international standards.
