Former National Security Advisor John Bolton claims businessman Ronald Lauder suggested to Trump that the U.S. should purchase Greenland.
Bolton on Trump’s Greenland Interest
Former National Security Advisor John Bolton told The Guardian that during Trump’s first presidential term in 2018, the president wanted to acquire Greenland. Bolton recounted how Trump summoned him to the Oval Office to discuss the suggestion, which came from prominent businessman Ronald Lauder.
Lauder’s Business Interests
Ronald Lauder, heir to the Estée Lauder cosmetics company and a long-time friend of Trump, had business interests in Greenland. Following his suggestion, the White House began showing increased interest in expanding U.S. influence in the territory.
Strategic Importance of Greenland
In early 2025, Trump again considered acquiring Greenland, with Lauder continuing to support the idea. Lauder argued in The New York Post that beneath Greenland’s ice lies a treasure trove of rare earth elements essential for artificial intelligence, advanced weaponry, and modern technologies. He noted that as the ice recedes, new shipping routes are emerging that change global trade and security.
Recent Developments
After meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, Trump announced that frameworks had been agreed upon regarding Greenland’s future. According to the president’s advisors, the U.S. would obtain limited sovereignty over areas designated for military bases. However, NATO and Denmark did not confirm these arrangements.
Despite the lack of confirmation, Trump withdrew his threat to impose tariffs on eight European countries. NATO only stated that further talks between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland would focus on countering Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen indicated that the Commission would soon propose a significant investment package for Greenland.
