A series of false bomb alarms disrupted schools across Poland on Wednesday, prompting evacuations and raising concerns about potential foreign interference.
Wave of Bomb Threats Disrupts Schools
A series of false bomb alarms put emergency services on high alert in several Polish cities, including Warsaw, Poznan, and Lublin. While police have released limited information, experts believe foreign involvement must be investigated.
“This is too widespread to be coincidental,” says Major Robert Cheda, a former analyst with the Intelligence Agency, to DGP.
Initial Reports and Evacuations
Reports of bomb threats began arriving at emergency services early Wednesday morning, starting in Warsaw. Preschool staff found emails in their inboxes reporting bombs had been planted.
By 8:30 AM, Warsaw authorities had received reports of 30 identical incidents. All affected preschools and schools were evacuated, and bomb disposal teams were dispatched. Police confirmed no explosive devices were found. By noon, similar alarms had appeared in approximately 200 educational institutions.
Nationwide Scale and Concerns
The scale of the alarm became clear as similar reports began arriving from other Polish cities, including Poznan and Lublin. Authorities describe the action as having a “cascading effect,” requiring police to inspect all alerted schools.
Robert Cheda, the former intelligence officer, finds this scale concerning, stating, “This is too widespread to be coincidental.”
Are the Alarms a Diversion?
Poland has experienced similar mass-scale incidents in recent years. In 2019, nearly 800 schools received emails threatening detonation during matriculation exams. The Internal Security Agency investigated and attributed the series of alarms to Russia’s GRU.
In 2023, a similar disruption paralyzed Polish airports with false bomb threats on aircraft and in terminals. While the alarms proved false, government officials described the pattern as “typical of Russian actions.” Cheda believes the possibility of foreign involvement must be investigated today as well.
Potential Actors and Motives
“In such cases today, three threads should be investigated: an attack by Russian services, Iranian services, because they have very well developed ones, and by some madman. There is a war with Iran and there are threats from the ayatollahs to activate European networks, and we are, after all, an ally of the United States,” says the expert.
Cheda also notes the scale of the attack. He suggests that foreign actors often aim to create confusion and a sense of threat. The current scale, he believes, suggests a deeper operation.
“This is showing that they can stir things up, and perhaps this opens a cycle that we need to prepare for. It is also an excellent way to test the internal security system, but it can also be associated with a cover for some operation, to divert the police in several cities at one time,” Cheda stated.
