A series of false bomb alarms disrupted schools across Poland, prompting evacuations and raising concerns about potential foreign interference, according to a former intelligence officer.
Nationwide School Bomb Threats Trigger Investigation
A wave of false bomb alarms put emergency services on high alert in several Polish cities, including Warsaw, Poznan, and Lublin. While police have released limited information, experts believe the scale of the incidents suggests potential involvement of foreign intelligence agencies.
Reports of bomb threats in schools and kindergartens began arriving at services early Wednesday morning, starting in Warsaw, where staff found email threats in their inboxes.
Scale of the Alarms Prompts Security Concerns
By 8:30 AM, Warsaw authorities had received reports of 30 identical incidents. All alarmed preschools and schools were promptly evacuated, and bomb disposal teams were dispatched. Police confirmed no explosive devices were found. By noon, similar alarms had been reported in approximately 200 educational institutions.
The situation escalated as similar reports began emerging from other Polish cities, including Poznan and Lublin. Authorities described the action as having a “cascading effect,” requiring police to inspect all affected schools. This widespread nature is considered concerning by intelligence experts.
Possible Cover for Larger Operation?
Similar mass incidents have occurred in Poland in the past. In 2019, nearly 800 schools received emails threatening detonation during matriculation exams, later attributed to Russia’s GRU. In 2023, false bomb alerts disrupted Polish airports, also suspected to be a Russian operation.
Expert Points to Potential Actors
Robert Cheda, a former intelligence officer, suggests investigating three potential sources: Russian intelligence services, Iranian intelligence services, and a lone actor. He notes ongoing tensions with Iran and threats from Iranian leaders to activate networks in Europe, given Poland’s alliance with the United States.
Wider Implications and System Testing
Cheda believes the scale of the attacks suggests a broader objective beyond simply causing disruption and fear. He suggests it could be a test of Poland’s internal security system or a diversionary tactic to distract police resources in multiple cities.
