Breakthrough in Iwona Wieczorek Case as Police Launch New Investigation in Sopot

Polish police have intensified investigations in Sopot in connection with the 2010 disappearance of 19-year-old Iwona Wieczorek, with new evidence suggesting potential breakthrough in the cold case.

National Prosecutor’s Office Reactivates Investigation

Wednesday, January 14, 2026, brought rapid acceleration in operational activities conducted in Sopot. TVP Info reports that a police tent was set up on Polna Street, an area historically associated with the missing woman’s former acquaintances, while detectives in white coveralls began securing traces. Although the National Prosecutor’s Office officially only states it is examining an “unexplained murder from several years ago” for grounds to resume a discontinued proceeding, the territorial and temporal context clearly points to the Iwona Wieczorek case.

Experts, including investigative journalist Mikołaj Podolski, emphasize that Polna Street was a key point in 2010 for people in the 19-year-old’s environment.

“Fakt” Reports Police Know Location of Remains

Simultaneous with the field actions, sensational information from the “Fakt” newspaper reached the public. According to the newspaper’s findings, police currently possess precise knowledge of where Iwona Wieczorek’s remains may be located. The activities on Polna Street were intended to secure material evidence that led investigators to this specific lead, although the body itself is said to be in a different location.

These unofficial information align with the determination of law enforcement authorities, which once again decided to publicize the image and technical details of a vehicle that may have direct connection to the case.

White Fiat Cinquecento as Key Evidence

A crucial element of the puzzle remains the white Fiat Cinquecento, which the Capital City Police Command reminded about in a special communication on Saturday, January 17. Analysis of monitoring material shows that on July 17, 2010, at 5:07 AM—just minutes after the last recorded image of walking Iwona Wieczorek—the vehicle was moving along Piastowska Street toward the entrance to beach number 63. Investigators precisely established that the vehicle then traveled a route through Rumia and Reda to the area near Puck.

Police Appeal for Information

The proceedings in this case are supervised by the Małopolski Branch Office of the Department for Organized Crime and Corruption Prosecution of the National Prosecutor’s Office in Kraków, which indicates the involvement of prosecutors specializing in the most difficult cases from the so-called Archive X. The high rank of the supervising unit and the involvement of the KSP Department for Fighting Criminal Terrorism and Murder confirm that the case is not treated merely as a missing person search but as a multi-threaded investigation into murder.

Police are renewing their appeal to all individuals who may have information about the driver of the white Fiat, offering contact at phone number 573-934-910.

High-Profile Case Reflects on Polish Justice System

The tragedy of July 2010, when 19-year-old Iwona Wieczorek disappeared on her way from the Sopot Dream Club to her home in Gdańsk, has permanently entered Polish debates about the effectiveness of law enforcement. Despite more than 15 years passing, modern analytical techniques and consistent examination of peripheral threads, such as the Fiat Cinquecento’s journey, offer hope for finalizing an indictment. For the justice system, solving this case would demonstrate the effectiveness of the prosecutorial division in fighting the so-called dark number of murders that have remained unsolved for years.
