Bulgarian Authorities Blame Russia for Emergency Landing of EU Chief’s Plane

The aircraft carrying EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made an emergency landing in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on Sunday due to navigation issues, with EU leadership suspecting possible Russian interference.

Incident Overview

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 31st, when Von der Leyen’s plane had to perform an emergency landing at Plovdiv Airport in Bulgaria. The cause of the emergency landing was attributed to navigation system issues.

EU Response

A spokesperson for the European Commission informed that the EU suspects possible Russian involvement in the incident. “We are of course aware and accustomed to the high-risk and intimidation which form part of Russia’s hostile actions,” said Arianna Podesta.

Russia’s Role

Bulgarian authorities consider this to be a blatant act of Russian interference in their airspace. The event could potentially lead to increased defense spending, with EU Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius confirming plans to increase the number of low-earth orbit satellites to improve interference detection capabilities.

Military Discussions

Before boarding a flight to Bulgaria, Von der Leyen attended a brief meeting with former Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk near the Polish-Belarusian border. Tusk emphasized the need for the EU and its allies to take a tough, decisive stance against what he termed “the new version of an empire of evil” posed by Russia.
