Canada Prepared for Potential US Invasion in First Such Exercise in Decades

Canadian military conducted US invasion simulation for first time in decades, developing response plans including guerrilla tactics.

Canadian Military Conducted US Invasion Simulation

The Globe and Mail reported that the Canadian military conducted a simulation of a US invasion of Canada. The newspaper emphasized that this happened for the first time in decades. Canadians had also developed a response plan for hypothetical US aggression.

It was established that Canadian armed forces could in such a situation apply insurgent tactics similar to those used by mujahideen in Afghanistan. The Globe and Mail cited information obtained from two high-ranking officials.

US Attack on Canada Considered Unlikely Scenario

The Canadian military determined that it does not have sufficient military personnel or advanced equipment to repel an American attack through conventional means. Therefore, the response to a potential US invasion envisages the use of irregular military units or armed civilians.

As noted by The Globe and Mail, its sources believe it is unlikely that the Donald Trump administration would order an invasion of Canada. The developed models are said to be merely conceptual frameworks for hypothetical actions of the Canadian military.

NBC News: Donald Trump Claims Canada Incapable of Defending Its Borders

NBC News unofficially determined that Donald Trump increasingly tells his colleagues about Canada’s alleged inability to defend its borders against interference from Russia or China. Trump is said to be convincing that Canada should increase defense spending.

The station also reported that the US administration is conducting internal discussions about a potential agreement with Canada to strengthen its northern border. The US would treat such an agreement as part of a broader strategy toward the Arctic.

Canadian Prime Minister on Greenland Conflict

On Tuesday, January 20, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The politician commented on the dispute over Greenland.

“We strongly support Greenland and Denmark, and we fully support their exclusive right to decide on Greenland’s future,” he declared. Carney thereby referred to statements by Donald Trump, who claims that the US must take control of Greenland for security reasons.
