A Volkswagen became stranded on tram tracks near Banacha and Grójecka streets Sunday, blocking trams already halted by a fatal incident.
Sunday Incident
At approximately 16:30 on Sunday, 22 February 2025, a Volkswagen driver turning left from Grójecka onto Banacha drove onto tram tracks near the Banacha tram stop. The vehicle passed over a concrete section before falling into a depression between the rails, becoming immobilized and blocking tram traffic.
Exacerbated Disruption
The incident compounded existing tram disruptions caused by a fatal event at the Hala Banacha stop, suspending service toward the P+R Al. Krakowska loop. The stuck vehicle also blocked access to the Banacha loop’s turning circle, forcing trams to terminate and reverse at plac Narutowicza. The track clearance took around 40 minutes, with full service resuming by 17:10. Police did not fine the driver, who only signed a statement regarding assistance from Tramwaje Warszawskie.
Similar Past Incidents
On 23 December 2025, around 11:00, a car similarly turned from Grójecka onto Banacha tracks, fell into a deep depression near the stop, and was stuck for 30 minutes. It required removal using technical equipment like a Unimog vehicle. On 18 December 2025, a Volkswagen Taigo became stuck on Banacha tracks around 21:40. On 14 December 2025, a BMW driven by a foreign national entered the tracks around 22:40; the driver, found intoxicated (approx. 2 per mille), was detained, blocking two road lanes and tram service.
Traffic Context
The Banacha-Grójecka intersection has operated under temporary traffic arrangements due to road and tram infrastructure work. Since early December 2025, trams returned to the Banacha loop, and Banacha street and a second Grójecka lane reopened to drivers.
