Ceiling collapses in Warsaw office lobby after sprinkler malfunction

On Wednesday, February 4, a suspended ceiling collapsed in a Warsaw office building lobby after a sprinkler system malfunction flooded the structure.

Incident Details

On Wednesday, February 4, at approximately 3:54 PM, an unusual incident occurred at Twarda Street 18 in downtown Warsaw, where a suspended ceiling collapsed in an office building lobby.

Initial reports from witnesses and shared media indicated that not only had a portion of the ceiling collapsed, but the floor in the building’s entrance area had also been damaged.

Fire Department Response

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and determined that the ceiling collapse was caused by a faulty sprinkler line, which is part of the building’s fire protection system.

Water from the damaged section poured onto the ceiling structure, causing its weight to increase until it collapsed in the lobby area.

Building Management Action

The building’s maintenance manager arrived on-site and shut off the water supply to the damaged circuit of the sprinkler system.

Due to safety regulations, buildings cannot operate with impaired fire protection systems, so the building management decided to evacuate the premises.

Aftermath

The fire department handed over responsibility for the incident to building management and did not conduct further investigations.

The restoration of full functionality, including repairs to the fire protection system and alarm systems, remains the responsibility of the building’s administrators.
