Sławomir Cenckiewicz resigned as head of Poland’s National Security Bureau (BBN), alleging obstruction by the government of Donald Tusk and a disregard for court rulings.
Bogucki Attributes Resignation to “State Responsibility”
Zbigniew Bogucki stated Cenckiewicz’s decision stemmed from a sense of responsibility towards the state, the BBN, the President’s administration, and President Karol Nawrocki himself.
Bogucki described a “deep pathology of the state” and accused the ruling government of disrespecting court decisions regarding Cenckiewicz’s access to classified information.
Bogucki Blames the Government
Bogucki asserted that the government is disregarding court rulings, even those of the Supreme Administrative Court, and engaging in a “vile, false” campaign against Cenckiewicz.
The current Deputy will serve as acting head of the BBN, with President Nawrocki to announce any permanent replacement.
Why Cenckiewicz Resigned from the BBN
Presidential Spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz officially announced Cenckiewicz’s resignation on Thursday, effective April 23, 2026.
The resignation was described as “pro-state” and linked to government actions that were paralyzing the BBN’s operations.
Cenckiewicz Cites “Illegal Government Actions”
Cenckiewicz himself attributed his resignation to the “illegal actions of Donald Tusk’s government,” which he claims disrespects court rulings and unjustly denies him access to classified information.
He also stated the BBN was subjected to “brutal interference and pressure” from the current authorities.
Cenckiewicz Aims to Relieve Presidential Office Pressure
Cenckiewicz emphasized his departure was intended to “free the Office of the President of the Republic of Poland from constant pressure and interference,” adding he himself had become a pretext for attacks against the President and his office.
Dispute Over Security Clearance
Sławomir Cenckiewicz had led the National Security Bureau since August 2025, appointed by President Karol Nawrocki despite a prior dispute over his security clearance.
The Presidential Chancellery noted that last week, the Supreme Administrative Court dismissed the KPRM’s cassation complaint, effectively restoring his access to classified information.
Leśkiewicz: Cenckiewicz “Won the Case” But Resigned to Protect BBN
Rafał Leśkiewicz stated Cenckiewicz “won the case” regarding access to classified materials, but chose to resign to prevent the government from using the situation as a pretext for further actions against the BBN and the President.
