Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Chamenei has reportedly prepared succession plans in anticipation of a potential US attack, according to New York Times.
Chamenei Names Successors amid US Threats
In January, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Chamenei reportedly ordered Chairman of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani to “lead the country” and ensure the survival of the Islamic Republic, including its highest leadership. According to The New York Times, Chamenei issued directives for scenarios involving the death of high-ranking officials, requiring each to designate up to four successors.
In the event of the leader’s own death, decision-making authority would be transferred to a narrow circle of Chamenei’s trusted loyalists. A conservative analyst close to the government, Nasser Imani, stated that “the role of Larijani will be particularly important in time of war.”
Iranian Minister Advocates for Diplomatic Solution
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi told CBS News that Iran is open to diplomacy but will not succumb to pressure through attack threats. Aragchi emphasized that diplomacy remains the only path to resolving Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, stating, “If they want to find a solution… the only way is diplomacy.”
He expressed confidence in reaching a mutually beneficial diplomatic solution, asserting that military expansion is unnecessary and ineffective in exerting pressure on Iran.
Possibility of US-Iran Escalation
Two Israeli officials reportedly told Reuters that the probability of escalation between the United States and Iran is high. Former American diplomat and Iran specialist Alan Eyre commented that “both sides are sticking to their positions.”
However, the Israel Hayom portal claims Iran has signaled readiness to cooperate under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, while insisting that its uranium enrichment facilities remain on Iranian territory.
Trump’s Position on Iran
Additional reporting suggests US President Donald Trump has not ruled out a limited military strike against Iran, stating “I’m considering it” according to an article referenced in the original report.
