Chamenei Reportedly Sought Treatment in Russia, Iran Denies

Reports emerged alleging that Mojtaba Chamenei received medical treatment in Moscow following an attack, but Iranian officials have refuted the claims.

Initial Reports of Treatment in Moscow

Several days ago, the Kuwaiti newspaper “Al-Dżarida,” citing sources close to Iran’s Supreme Leader, reported that Mojtaba Chamenei was transported by a Russian military aircraft to Moscow for treatment. He reportedly underwent a successful operation and would convalesce in a hospital wing of a presidential residence, with assistance offered by Vladimir Putin.

Iran Denies the Claims

Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, denied reports that Mojtaba Chamenei was receiving treatment in Moscow, according to Russian media reported by Reuters on Tuesday, March 17th. The Kremlin declined to comment on the matter.

Injuries Sustained in Attack

Mojtaba Chamenei was reportedly injured in a U.S.-Israeli attack at the beginning of the war, coinciding with the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the previous Supreme Leader of Iran. His son replaced him on March 8th by decision of the Assembly of Experts. The Iranian president’s son, Jusef Pezeshkian, confirmed that Chamenei sustained light injuries.

Details of the Attack Revealed by ‘The Telegraph’

On Monday, March 16th, the British newspaper “The Telegraph” revealed that Mojtaba Chamenei survived the attack only because he went for a walk in the garden of his residence minutes before the strike. The newspaper obtained a recording of a meeting with high-ranking clerics and commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), where Mazer Hosseini, head of protocol in the office of Ali Khamenei, detailed the attack.

Hosseini stated that Mojtaba Chamenei was only slightly injured in the leg, while his wife and son were killed on the spot. He also stated that the attacks were coordinated and simultaneously targeted several locations within the complex, aiming to eliminate the entire Chamenei family. He said three rockets hit his residence at 9:32 a.m. local time on February 28th.
