Mexican authorities report dozens of deaths following the killing of cartel leader “El Mencho” in Jalisco state.
Attacks After Cartel Leader’s Death
On Monday, February 23, Mexico’s Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch informed that in six attacks following the killing of drug gang leader Nemesio Rubén Osegura Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” in Jalisco state, 25 members of the National Guard were killed.
Victims Include Security Personnel
Among the victims are a prison service officer, a state prosecutor employee, and a woman whose identity was not disclosed. Harfuch also reported that about 30 suspected criminals were killed in Jalisco, and four in Michoacán state.
US Support for Mexican Operation
The White House confirmed that the United States provided intelligence support for the operation aimed at capturing the cartel leader. The Mexican military was also praised for capturing one of the most wanted criminals in both countries.
Cartel Leader Killed During Military Operation
“El Mencho,” who headed one of Mexico’s fastest-growing criminal organizations responsible for smuggling drugs to the United States, was killed during a shootout in his home state of Jalisco when Mexican military attempted to arrest him.
Cartel Response Widespread Violence
In response to the leader’s death, cartel members launched a wave of violence across various parts of the country, blocking roads, setting vehicles on fire, and attacking security forces. His supporters blocked highways and set buses and buildings on fire.
Authorities Urge Caution
Local media report an armed group attacked a prison, potentially allowing convicts to escape. Mexican authorities are trying to calm residents while urging people to stay indoors in threatened areas and avoid routes where violence has occurred.
