China Denies Arms Shipment to Iran Despite U.S. Intelligence

U.S. intelligence suggests China may deliver new air defense systems to Iran in the coming weeks, despite Beijing’s denial and recent mediation efforts.

China Denies Allegations, U.S. Possesses Data

China denies allegations of providing weapons to Iran, but the U.S. claims to have data suggesting otherwise.

U.S. Intelligence: Potential Air Defense System Transfer

U.S. intelligence sources indicate China may transfer new air defense systems to Iran within weeks, CNN reported Saturday, citing three informed sources.

CNN assesses this would be a provocative move, given Beijing’s claim to have helped negotiate a ceasefire in the recent U.S.-Iran conflict, which began earlier this week, and ahead of President Trump’s planned visit to China in early May for talks with Xi Jinping.

Iran Could Use Ceasefire to Replenish Arms

Intelligence suggests Iran may use the ceasefire as an opportunity to replenish its arms supplies with assistance from key foreign partners.

Indirect Supply Routes Allegedly Used

Two sources told CNN there are indications Beijing is attempting to route deliveries through third countries to conceal their origin.

MANPADs as a Potential Threat

The systems reportedly being prepared for transfer are portable air defense systems (MANPADs), which posed an asymmetric threat to low-flying U.S. military aircraft during the five-week conflict and could do so again if the ceasefire breaks down.

Escalation of Chinese Support for Iran

Delivery of MANPADs to Iran would represent an increase in Chinese support since the start of the U.S.-Israel joint military campaign in February. Sources state Chinese firms continue to sell Iran sanctioned dual-use technology, enabling further weapons production and navigation system improvements, but direct weapons transfers by the Chinese government would signify a new level of support.

Chinese Embassy Response

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington denied the reports, stating, “China has never supplied weapons to any party in the conflict” and urged the U.S. to “refrain from making unfounded accusations.”
