China dispatched naval and air forces to the South China Sea after accusing the Philippines of illegally entering airspace near Scarborough Shoal.
South China Sea Dispute Intensifies
Tensions between China and the Philippines escalated Wednesday with China’s deployment of military forces to the South China Sea.
The Chinese military reported sending naval and air forces to intercept and expel two Philippine aircraft allegedly entering airspace over the disputed Scarborough Shoal.
China Demands Philippines Cease “Provocations”
The Southern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army stated, “We solemnly urge the Philippine side to immediately stop infringements and provocations.”
Diplomatic Row Further Complicated
The latest escalation follows claims by the Chinese embassy that a Philippine diplomat previously acknowledged Scarborough Shoal does not belong to Philippine territory.
Manila officials firmly rejected Beijing’s claims of sovereignty over the entire South China Sea on Monday.
Philippines Reaffirms International Law
Philippine Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rogelio Villanueva stated, “It must be remembered that maritime and territorial claims are subject to established international legal procedures… and not unilateral proclamations or social media posts.”
Scarborough Shoal Remains Under Chinese Control
The strategically important Scarborough Shoal, located approximately 220 km from the Philippines within its exclusive economic zone, is effectively controlled by China.
This is despite a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague that invalidated Beijing’s claims to the waters, a ruling China does not recognize.
Incidents continue to occur regularly in the disputed area.
