A powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in China’s Hunan province on Monday afternoon prompted a large-scale rescue operation and safety zone.
Powerful Force of Detonation
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, May 4th, after 4:40 PM local time (10:40 AM in Poland) at the Huasheng facilities. Approximately 500 rescuers were immediately dispatched to the scene, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The rescue operation was complicated by the risk of secondary explosions, necessitating the use of remote-controlled robots. A three-kilometer safety zone was established, and residents were evacuated.
Witness Accounts Detail Blast Impact
According to witnesses cited by the Beijing newspaper “Xinjing Bao,” the detonation was so powerful that windows cracked and frames were deformed in nearby homes. One resident reported that “the shockwave lifted boulders into the air.”
Frequent Fireworks Accidents in China
Accidents related to pyrotechnics are not uncommon in China. In June of last year, nine people were killed and 26 injured in a fireworks factory accident near the city of Changde. In February 2025, at least eight people died and two were injured in an explosion and fire at a fireworks store in Jiangsu province.
Government Response and Investigation
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has ordered the search for missing persons and called for a swift investigation into the cause of the accident, demanding strict accountability for those responsible. Premier Li Qiang appealed for the prevention of secondary accidents during the rescue operation.
Hunan province is a major hub for Chinese fireworks factories, including those producing goods for export to markets like the United States.
