Civic Coalition Councilors Oppose Trzaskowski’s Street Narrowing Plan

Warsaw’s Civic Coalition councilors oppose Mayor Trzaskowski’s street narrowing policy, sparking intra-party conflict.

Criticism of Sustainable Development Policy

According to “Gazeta Wyborcza,” during a district council session, including Civic Coalition majority members, critical remarks were submitted against the #Warszawa2040+ Strategy proposal. Councilors directly stated that “sustainable development” policy practically worsens residents’ daily living conditions. One KO councilor admitted, as quoted by “Wyborcza,” that while supporting the Warsaw mayor might seem natural, narrowing streets was deemed “absurd” for the district.

Political Dimensions and Key Arteries

Meanwhile, “Do Rzeczy” emphasizes the political aspect, describing the Praga-Południe council’s stance as growing opposition to the city hall’s direction. The weekly highlights that the opposition concerns key communication arteries in right-bank Warsaw – including al. Waszyngtona, ul. Grochowska, and ul. Ostrobramska. Councilors believe narrowing these roads could cause traffic paralysis and divert traffic to residential streets.

Demand for Pedestrian Infrastructure

Both sources note council demands extend beyond defending drivers. “Gazeta Wyborcza” reports councilors also seek improved pedestrian infrastructure accessibility, including ground-level crossings instead of footbridges and tunnels, and better separation of pedestrian and bike traffic. “Do Rzeczy” interprets these proposals as an attempt to correct urban policy perceived as overly favoring ideological solutions over residents’ practical needs.
