Civic Coalition Elects New Leadership, Eyes 2027 Election Strategy

Poland’s Civic Coalition (KO) held a national council meeting Saturday, electing five new vice-chairpersons and outlining plans for the 2027 parliamentary elections.

New Leadership Team Confirmed

The Civic Coalition’s National Council meeting consisted of two parts: a speech by Prime Minister Donald Tusk (with media transmission) and elections for the National Board of KO. Fifteen new vice-chairpersons were elected, confirming previous reports.

Among those elected as vice-chairpersons were ministers Domański and Sikorski, as well as Education Minister Barbara Nowacka and government spokesman Adam Szłapka. Senate Vice-Marshal Rafał Grupiński also joined Tusk’s deputy team.

Existing Leaders Retained

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, Special Services Coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak, Senate Marshal Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, Sejm Vice-Marshal Dorota Niedziela, Minister Marzena Okła-Drewnowicz, Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk, former Health Minister Izabela Leszczyna, and MEPs Ewa Kopacz, Borys Budka, and Bartosz Arłukowicz will remain on the board.

Key Positions Unchanged

Jan Grabiec will continue as treasurer, and Marcin Kierwiński as Secretary General, though there was some uncertainty regarding Kierwiński’s position until Friday evening.

Tusk Announces Election Preparations and Coalition Unity

Premier Tusk surprised attendees with declarations regarding the selection of a “ten” for the 2027 parliamentary elections and a call for a united front among the current ruling coalition parties. He emphasized openness to cooperation to “stop the evil lurking beyond our border,” but stressed the need to avoid mutual attacks.

Potential Collaboration with Poland 2050

Sources indicate discussions revolve around potential collaboration with Poland 2050 and its leader, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, who has publicly criticized ministers from other coalition parties. Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk emphasized the importance of presenting a unified front to voters.

Joint List Discussions Postponed

Minister Kierwiński stated that discussions regarding a potential joint list for the ruling coalition will take place next year, citing the example of Hungary where opposition parties united to oust Viktor Orbán.

“Tusk’s Ten” Appointed

A group of ten individuals – Andrzej Domański, Cezary Tomczyk, Adam Szłapka, and MPs Monika Rosa, Paweł Bliźniuk, Maciej Tomczykiewicz, Deputy Minister Aleksandra Gajewska, Deputy Minister Maciej Wróbel, Deputy Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka, and Deputy Minister Małgorzata Gromadzka – have been tasked with preparing the party for the 2027 election.

This “ten” will focus on analyzing voter preferences, developing effective communication strategies, and preparing for a nationwide campaign. They represent a mix of younger members and experienced party specialists.
