Dozens of religious activists were arrested at the US Capitol on January 30 while protesting Trump’s immigration policy and ICE funding.
Arrests of Religious Activists in USA
The non-profit organization Faith in Action reported that on Friday, January 30, Capitol Police arrested dozens of peacefully inclined clergy. They were protesting against Donald Trump’s immigration policy and funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Funding an organization that commits harm, persecution, and kills is unacceptable. Not one dollar for ICE,” the organization stated.
Group of Officers Around Singing Activists
The Kairos Center organization published a recording showing numerous officers who circled around singing activists. At one point, some protesters attempted to raise a banner reading “abolish ICE, dissolve DHS (Department of Homeland Security).”
However, the officers took away the banner and other props before placing handcuffs on the protest participants.
Police Revealed the Reason for the Intervention
According to Reuters Agency reports, a spokesperson for the United States Capitol Police stated that demonstrations in Congressional buildings “are illegal.” As a result, 54 demonstrators were arrested.
The protests against Donald Trump’s immigration policy began after federal agents shot two citizens in Minnesota.
