Clintons Challenge, Seek Public Testimony in Epstein Case

Former US President Bill Clinton and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton agreed to sworn testimony before House Oversight Committee after it recommended contempt charges for their prior refusal.

Clinton’s Stance Shift

Former US President Bill Clinton and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton consented to testify under oath before the House Oversight Committee. This decision followed the committee’s recommendation to hold them in contempt for their initial refusal to appear personally. Reuters reports the Clintons’ agreement may block a planned vote on a contempt resolution, which could, in extreme cases, lead to criminal liability.

Public Hearing Demand

Though initially summoned for closed-door depositions, the Clintons changed strategy, publicly demanding full transparency. Hillary Clinton voiced irritation with Republicans, stating: “Enough games. You love talking about transparency. Nothing is more transparent than a public, live-broadcast hearing.” She accused the oversight committee of ignoring sworn explanations and “changing the rules mid-game,” turning the probe into a political spectacle.

Republicans: Rule-Breaking Claim

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer refuted the claims, emphasizing the Clintons face no special treatment. He noted other key Epstein witnesses—like former Attorney General Bill Barr and former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta—also testified behind closed doors. Republicans accused the Clintons of distorting facts and shifting the dispute to the media, arguing the procedure complies with House rules and public hearings could occur later.

Testimony Dates Set

A committee spokeswoman confirmed testimony dates for February 26 and 27. These will be closed-door, transcribed depositions, with potential for future public sessions. House Speaker Mike Johnson told Reuters lawyers are reviewing the agreement with the Clintons, and the matter remains “ongoing.”

Epstein Case Files

The investigation accelerated after the US Justice Department released millions of documents on Jeffrey Epstein—the financier accused of human trafficking and operating a sexual abuse network of minors. The documents reveal Epstein’s connections to top political, business, and academic circles. Bill Clinton repeatedly acknowledged flying on Epstein’s private jet post-presidency but stressed he had no knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities.
