A conductor attacked during a ticket inspection in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany, has died from his injuries. German railways Deutsche Bahn announced the death on Wednesday, January 4, condemning the “horrific act of violence” and “completely senseless death of our colleague.”

Attack Details

The attack occurred on Monday evening, February 2, as the train approached Landstuhl station near Kaiserslautern. Investigators said the 36-year-old conductor was trying to remove a passenger from the train for lacking a ticket when he was attacked.

The conductor suffered serious injuries requiring resuscitation and was transported to the hospital.

Suspect in Custody

Police have arrested a 26-year-old Greek citizen without a permanent address in Germany. The suspect was apprehended at the scene, with the Zweibrücken district court issuing an arrest warrant on February 3, 2026.

Initially, police provided no details about any weapons used in the attack. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder.

Investigation Continues

The Zweibrücken prosecution confirmed the conductor’s death and ordered an autopsy, which was scheduled for the same day.
