Six newly elected judges of Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal took their oaths in the Sejm, despite a refusal from the Presidential Chancellery to host the ceremony.
Constitutional Tribunal Judges Sworn In
The swearing-in ceremony for newly elected judges of the Constitutional Tribunal commenced in the Column Hall of the Sejm.
The ceremony involved the newly selected judges receiving resolutions confirming their election by the Sejm.
Judges Who Took the Oath
The six judges sworn in on March 13th by the Sejm were Krystian Markiewicz, Maciej Taborowski, Marcin Dziurda, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, Magdalena Bentkowska, and Dariusz Szostek. Bentkowska, Dziurda, Markiewicz, and Taborowski had previously sworn their oaths before the President on April 1st.
Invitation to President Ignored
Four of the newly appointed judges – Markiewicz, Taborowski, Dziurda, and Korwin-Piotrowska – invited President Karol Nawrocki to the ceremony, requesting the swearing-in take place at the Presidential Palace. Their requests went unanswered.
Presidential Chancellery Rejects Swearing-In
Zbigniew Bogucki, Head of the Presidential Chancellery, stated on Polsat News that the swearing-in would not occur in the President’s presence.
Bogucki’s Statement on Procedure
Bogucki asserted that attempts to bypass the statutory procedure for swearing in Constitutional Tribunal judges must be considered a refusal to abide by the law, potentially leading to resignation from their positions.
Protests Outside the Sejm
Members of the Gazeta Polska clubs, along with supporters of the Border Defense Movement, gathered outside the Sejm building on Wiejska Street to protest.
Individual Swearing-Ins
Magdalena Bentkowska and Marcin Dziurda, both elected as judges of the Constitutional Tribunal, took their oaths in the Sejm.
